Stop procrastinating. If you take a micro-action, you’ll be able to achieve any goal you set.
Sometimes it is hard to get yourself to do the things that you need to do. Why would you delay things that are important that will help you to reach your goals? You have this huge goal yet, and you cannot seem to push through the mental blocks that you have, something that you desire to do full time. Something is blocking you, and you cannot beat procrastination. Seems familiar? This is something that we all experience over and over again, and worse is that you don’t even start! You stay trapped in your head. Procrastination is a big challenge we have all struggled at one point or another. For as long as humans have been around, we have been fighting with avoiding, delaying, and procrastinating on issues that matter to us. During our more productive moments, when we temporarily understand how to stop procrastinating, we feel happy and accomplished. Exactly, only for the moment. We are what we repeatedly do. There are mental habits that are bad. There are emotional habits that are bad. There are physical habits that are bad. The worst habit and you are going to hate me for saying this – the first hour of the day is touching your phone! It is the worse thing you could do because you have this addiction to it, and I will tell you the reason why you don’t want to do it when you are waking up. It’s important to understand how your brain contributes to the state of your mind.
Most of us focus on looking at our emotions in an attempt to become happier, efficient, and more creative, our brain waves also play a crucial part in our quest for fulfillment. I am referring to superhero states, your brain cycles through different brain waves. Did you know that we all have five brain states: Beta, Alpha, Theta, Delta and Gamma? Let me focus on three main states (Beta, Alpha, and Delta). Each particular frequency is aligned in cycles per second and has its own set of features expressing a specific level of brain activity and a unique state of consciousness? Beta brain waves are associated with a state of alertness, logic and critical reasoning. Alpha brain waves are active in deep relaxation, during meditation, and when the eyes are closed. That state of waves is an optimal time to program the mind for success, including your visualization, imagination, learning, memory, and focus. The Delta cycle is the slowest of the frequencies and appears in deep, dreamless sleep, also in a profound transcendental meditation where our consciousness is fully detached.
So when you are almost awake, and the first thing you do is grabbing your phone you experience ‘in-between’ state – Beta and Delta. That is the most significant time for mind programming your mind, where the creative power of your mind begins. It’s the mental state which you create your reality. So basically you are wasting the most productive time in your day by scrolling the Instagram or Facebook page. Take time and think about it.
Your character is formed by habits, and the habits are formed by discipline or lack of discipline. You have a good habit because you discipline yourself, or you have bad habits because you don’t discipline yourself. That discipline becomes habits, and those habits become your character. Simple!
I have never viewed myself as particularly talented. I considered myself as, you know, slightly above average in talent and where I excel sickly strong work principles. When some people are sleeping, I am working; when some are having fun, I am exercising, learning, journaling, mastering details. Most people who are procrastinating they are in the state of procrastination. That’s the feeling, right? Or they have a poor strategy for executing thing ‘getting things done.’ One of the best ways of changing yourself and your state is by moving your body because as your body moves, your brain groups! Physical exercise makes your brain work better!
The thing about life, business, and success is that you have to be willing to start. For people that procrastinate, worry or think too big, the starting point is the hardest part. If you want to get off the cycle of bad habits and average life-choices that you have been living in, go out of your way to take a small step forward. Then another and another. I learned very young that you don’t try to build a big project or business immediately. You don’t set out to build the big plan. You don’t say ‘I am going to build the biggest business, the greatest that has ever been built.’ You don’t start there! You say I am going to lay this small block perfectly as a block can be laid. There will not be even one block on that earth that is going to be laid better than mine! You do that every single day, and soon you have a business built. That way of thinking helps to break down impossible goals into manageable pieces. It helps to build habits and create momentum.
I think psychologically, that advantage that gives me over a lot of people that I have been working with. It is difficult to take the first step when you look at how big the task is. The task is never huge to me. It is always the first step. How do you force yourself to do it? Here is my advice; you can wake up in the morning and say ‘today I am committing to making small progress on my big thing, and I am curious about it.’
I believe there is a success formula, and it takes two part. It takes first showing up; 50% of the success is to show up. I think in life, we want to show up for our health, to show up for our relationships, show up for our career, our service. That is just showing up, is that just going get the job done? No! You have to play full out!
Why are you doing the things that you are doing? Why do you have bad habits? It is like when you find yourself at the same point, over and over again, and saying ‘oh, there is like a Groundhog Day.’ Why do I keep landing in the same spot over and over? Well, you have to look at it, and ask yourself, what are the things leading up to that? What are the decisions I am making? What is a habit? Why am I doing the things I am doing? And pretty soon you can start to recognize your own patterns, and when you do so, that’s when you create the change. You will feel resistant; you will struggle; you will start to think like ‘it needs to be perfect.’ You are going to come up with excuses; you are going to talk yourself out of it! Why? Well, because you used to think and you are asking yourself to do. The reason why I am trying to explain that because all those thinking patterns are normal! It is normal to feel scared; it is normal to feel like you don’t want to do this. And it is also normal to think about it as it is perfect.
Letting those things to stop you is your choice. The path to success is through commitment and through the strength to drive through that commitment when it gets hard. It is going to get hard, and you’re gonna want to quit. It will be colored by who you are, and more, who you want to be! The only solution is micro-actions, that is it. And you know what? I don’t even want to hear about your big goals! In fact, for everybody out there I don’t want to hear about your big dreams and goals until you are actually taking action every day for a couple of weeks straight. You don’t have to talk about your desires until you can prove that you wake up and every single day push yourself to take a small step, small action forward. If you can do that consistently for a month, then you can tell me about your life goals, and then you can start talking about how you build steel around it.
So commit yourself to do the action required!
